These Smoked Wild Teas are grown on lofty trees from Manipur which are collected over elephant backs to make the local beverage for colonial guests as a gesture of warmth and welcome. The tea leaves were fried and sun-dried to extract the best flavour, then smoked in bamboo cylinders to add piquancy to the tea. This procedure contributes to the lengthy shelf life of tea, which may survive for years and only improves with age.
